While embarking on my adventures of reading the Bible this year, I recently closed the final book of the Hebrew Bible, 2 Chronicles.
To be honest, the idea of simply 'thumbing through" the book of Chronicles did pass through my mind. Please forgive me, I am not one for a lot of history but I urge you continue reading ...
Apparently this idea of skipping over the Chronicles is very common because of the repetitive nature of the contents.
Heck, I already read it right? Why not save some time and jump into something new and fresh?
Yes, those type of thoughts cross our minds and we succumb to missing out on what God has in store for us.
Thankfully this idea went out from one ear to another and instead of opting for the easy way out, I dug IN. To my surprise, keeping my promise was a much more fulfilling than skipping over the entire book.
These two books, which were originally one book like Samuel and Kings, were books of history and heritage.
Likely written by Ezra, we see God's people focusing on the temple and worshiping and even the numerous kings who reigned over Judah and Israel. We are able to see how God showered blessings for those who served Him as well as the judgement for those who shunned Him. We also see a continuation of the line of David which leads to our Messiah!
Can you see the future HOPE?!
For those of you who are not history buffs like yours truly, I encourage you to not skip over the Book of Chronicles. Instead, ask God to give you a desire to read parts of the Old Testament that do not seem as interesting as other books. Ask Him for a special revelation; He is faithful and will give you the desire to DIG INto His Word.
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14
